How Running Changed Angela and Willie Gillis
In 2010, Angela and Willie Gillis, at 340 and 492 pounds, respectively, vowed to get healthy.

They walked on treadmills and, guided by advice from Runner’s World, gradually picked up the pace until Angela was ready for a half marathon in 2011. “It took me 2 hours and 55 minutes, but I did it,” she says.

In 2013, Willie signed up for his first half while Angela geared up for her first marathon. When a winter storm canceled both events, they ran their 13.1- and 26.2-mile courses anyway. “The run itself was our medal,” Willie says.

Now, 5 years after their get-healthy pact, Willie has run two marathons and 20 halfs. Angela, who aims to run a marathon in every state, says, “We are capable of more than we ever thought we were.”
